I Have A Learning Disability - 851 Words

High school, a place where adolescences are supposed to acquire information and prepare for college. Unfortunately, that is not the case in all high schools. Students face horrible counselors, which I may include, some are just there to be total social butterflies. Then, students have their fair share of teachers who just do not give a darn. Thus, by the end of the year a student will possibly feel like he and/or she did not learn enough. I was one of those unfortunate cases, and do not feel that my high school adequately prepared me for college. First and foremost, I have a learning disability: dyslexia. Which my assigned high school counselor should know about, to see what accommodations I qualify for. I walked into my counselor’s office to give her all the paperwork that has followed me since elementary school. I take a seat wait for her to respond, but in a blink of an eye, she was interrupted by her boisterous phone. Which, of course, I did not mind at first, I mean I was only one of several thousands of students who attended the high school, and I’m positive several other people needed her at once. When she picked up the phone I figured it was just one of her colleagues who needed information about scheduling (since it was the beginning of the year and it was hectic â€Å"schedule season†). Machiavelli writes The Prince centuries after Plato documents Socrates in Crito and The Apology. Despite the different time periods, both Machiavelli and Socrates experience times of turmoil where the concept of democracy was questioned. However, the different time periods cause the views and purposes of Machiavelli’s writing to largely differ from Socrates. Machiavelli writes in a time of turmoil where Italy was a bunch of small, fragmented states and when the Medici’s struggled to regain power after being expelled. This causes his views to be more cynical and pessimistic in comparison to Socrates. If Socrates were to read The Prince, he would disagree with Machiavelli’s beliefs and deem his portrayal of a prince as immoral. Their†¦show more content†¦Socrates’ contradicting views are presented when he claims, â€Å"Not from money does virtue come, but from virtue comes money and all of the other good things for human beings both privately and p ublicly† (Apology, 30b). Socrates disputes that fortuna comes from virtue and presents a cause and effect relationship, contrary to the interconnected relationship as presented by Machiavelli. A prince should use philosophical thinking to question and explore many ideas in order to amass success. Just having money and luck, on the other hand, will not lead to more success because the prince is unable to think about how he can execute his rulings. Through his views, he connotes how the ruler cannot start his reign with both fortuna and virtue. This contradicts with Machiavelli’s prince because Socrates disputes the lack of emphasis on fortune. However, it is plausible to argue that fortuna does not lead to success as seen in Socrates’ legacy. Socrates’ legacy is evidence that virtue is the more valuable of the two and the unnecessity of fortuna. Even if Socrates was a poor man, who has found his own philosophy in life, he is a heavily respected figure today. He turned down Crito’s fortune and power, and died as a â€Å"martyr†, leading to an increased remembrance of his philosophy. His legacy has lasted thousands of years without fortuna. Prosser and a group of his followers would procure armor and weapons then try and take over the city, thus freeing them from slavery. Unfortunately before they could execute the plan, him and some of his followers were put to death, an event that would prove to be a catalyst to the uprising. Following their deaths and many more to come, Africans slaves then would attempt to flee from their plantation or masters and run for freedom. Slaves in the southern states flee to the North just to try and have the same opportunities as whites. This escape only proves to ultimately hurt Rose of Sharon and Connie; they learn that illusions dont support a life when survival is the priority. Rose of Sharons dreams of a perfect life start to fall apart when Connie deserts her suddenly. She can no longer find comfort in shared thoughts of a white-picket fence, and is forced to face reality. However, instead of concentrating on the Joad family crises, she diverts her worries fully to her baby once again. She reverts to childish antics such as refusing to dance at Weedpatch because she thinks it might be bad for the baby. Her life becomes superficial now, rather than illusory, in order to escape her harsh reality once again. When Rose of Sharons baby is finally born, she expects to be rewarded for every moment and thought devoted to the life of her child. Instead, the baby is dead; her energies have been wasted, overcome by the reality she tried so hard to avoid by plunging her actions into the care of her child. She finally, truly sees that she must accept and take on reality in order for life to go on. So, when the Joad family comes across the starving man and his son, Rose of Sharon sees it as an opportunity to redeem her misguided actions, and chooses to sustain life.
